Botox provides freedom from hyperhidrosisAlthough Botox is mostly used for cosmetic purposes to treat wrinkles, it is a very effective treatment for excess sweating of the underarms, palms, soles, and forehead.

How Botox for hyperhidrosis works

Botox is injected into the skin and works by paralyzing the sweat ducts so they cannot excrete sweat. Treatment is performed in the office and takes about 20 minutes per area.

Botox for hyperhidrosis results

Treatment is very effective. Results start to appear within a few days and usually last for 6 – 8 months. Sweating never worsens after the Botox wears off. It just returns to baseline.

To make treatment of the palms and soles more comfortable, we often use a topical numbing cream in these areas. Treatment of the underarms is generally very well tolerated.

Botox treatment can be performed in conjunction with other treatments to reduce sweating including oral medications and prescription anti-perspirants.

Safety of Botox for hyperhidrosis

Botox has proven to be safe and low risk for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. There were no serious side effects in patients who participated in the FDA trials. One relatively minor side effect that can occur when treating the palms is temporary grip strength weakness lasting a few weeks after treeatment. However, this is not common.

Although other neurotoxins including Dysport and Xeomin can be used, they have not been officially studied for the reduction of excess sweating.
