Restylane Silk is the newest addition to the Restylane family of hyaluronic acid fillers. What is unique about it, is that it is smoother and finer than the other members of the Restylane family – Restylane and Perlane. Because of its consistency, it is a great choice for adding subtle plumpness to the lips and for filling fine lines around the mouth.

Restylane Silk is made out of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a protein-sugar molecule that is found naturally in our skin where it works to enhance hydration. When synthesized in a lab, hyaluronic acid can be designed to fill lines and add volume. Many products use hyaluronic acid for this purpose. What makes them different are differences in the way hyaluronic acid is manufactured. Due to differences in the manufacturing process, each of the hyaluronic acid products has slightly unique properties.
Restylane Silk is made in such a way that it is very smooth. It fills without lifting, so that makes it very good to use in the lip lines and to add subtle plumpness to those wanting a little extra, natural-appearing fullness in the lips. It will not plump the lips much, so the risk of getting ‘duck lips’ is low.
Restylane Silk is administered by injection. Usually, the lips are numbed with either a topical anesthetic or a dental block unless the patient requests otherwise. Treatment only takes a few minutes. Immediately afterward, there is swelling and there may be bruising. Both reside over time. To minimize the risk of bruising, avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil.
Both the development of fine lines around the lips and the loss of volume in the lip, are changes that happen with age. Smoothing lip lines and adding a natural amount of volume to the lips are important parts of rejuvenation. See the chart below.
