Safe Liposuction
Simply speaking, liposuction is a procedure to carefully and permanently remove unwanted fat. However, there are many different liposuction techniques. Dr. Osman believes that if the results of two different liposuction techniques are the same, you should choose the safer one.
Liposuction Using Local Anesthesia Safest
and Gives Best Results
Liposuction using local anesthesia only is by far the safest technique for permanently removing unwanted fat.
Simply stated, local anesthesia is far safer than any form of “twilight” anesthesia or sedation.
Best Results
Ultimately, the results of liposuction depend on the training and skill of the surgeon performing the procedure.
Nonetheless, a good surgeon can get even better results using the right technique. In liposuction using local anesthsia only, the suction tubes, called cannulas, are much smaller than traditional suction tubes. Therefore, they allow for more precise fat removal.
Using smaller suction tubes is similar to a sculptor using a smaller chisel. It may take a sculptor longer to chip away excess marble with a small chisel, but you can almost guarantee that the resulting sculpture will be smoother than if that same sculptor used a very large chisel. A large chisel would chip the marble away quickly but would leave rough edges.
Minimal Discomfort
An added benefit of liposuction using local anesthesia only is the long lasting effects of the local anesthesia. Many people know someone who had liposuction and their recovery was long and painful. That is not the case with liposuction using local anesthesia.
When only local anesthesia is used, most people can be active the very next day. That is because of two things: 1) the local anesthetic wears off very slowly and provides pain control for a long time, and 2) there is usually less trauma to the surrounding tissue when local anesthesia is used.
Less Downtime
Because there is less trauma, there is also less downtime. Most people are able to return to a full day of work in 1 - 2 days.
Almost Invisible Scars
Scars from liposuction can occur at the sites where the suction tubes are inserted. To minimize scars, openings are placed in hidden areas whenever possible. Scars after liposuction using local anesthesia only tend to be very small (and almost invisible) because the openings are smaller than those used with traditional liposuction.
